According to journalists and researchers in Inner Mongolia, out of the slightly fewer than 1.5 million ethnic Mongolians residing in the region at the time, the death toll reached 300,000. Subsequently, while the Mongolian population in Inner Mongolia stood at 2.5 million, the number of Han Chinese settlers surged dramatically to 30 million [2]. Yang Haiying observes that, triggered by this incident, Inner Mongolia was subjected to colonial settlement through "the methods by which the Han people (the Chinese) have expanded their territory into Manchuria, Mongolia, and Xinjiang since the 19th century." He states: "In the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Mongol population remains a mere 2.5 million, while the Chinese who subsequently settled there have—almost imperceptibly—swelled to a staggering 30 million; consequently, their respective demographic standings have been completely reversed. The process of colonial settlement employed by the Chinese is, fundamentally, the same everywhere: a 'human wave' strategy" [2].
